Transhumanist Manifestos and Dilemmas: A Decade and a Half of Reflection
Fifteen years ago, I penned the first versions of Hamlet’s Transhumanist Dilemma and A Transhumanist Manifesto. Much has changed since then, including my perspective.
I began with a question inspired by Hamlet: Will technology replace biology?
At the time, I believed this to be the modern iteration of Shakespeare’s existential query: to be or not to be.
Since death is a tragedy, I believed technology was our only escape. Yet, I feared choosing technology over biology might exact a heavy toll-a Faustian bargain.
I worried that transitioning from human to transhuman-or cyborg-might cost us something precious and unique, something not worth trading even for immortality. Hence, I titled the piece Hamlet’s Transhumanist Dilemma, believing there was no definitive answer and that each person must determine their own path.
A few months later, convinced I had found the answer, I dove headfirst into transhumanism. Everything seemed straightforward-black and white. As Transhumanist Party Chairman Gennady Stolyarov II succinctly put it: “Death is wrong, and life is right.”
Right.
The issue with dilemmas is their lack of clear answers. They are uncomfortable and excellent at posing questions but poor at providing solutions.
In contrast, manifestos leave no room for doubt. They are straightforward calls to action, confident in their solutions. Immersed in the transhumanist narrative, I wrote my manifesto, urging my fellow transhumanists to unite and break the ‘chains of biology and death.’
Fifteen years later, I find myself almost back where I began. [I guess, at least in some ways, life is a circle.] Yes, it is still true that dilemmas may not offer clear guidance, but they are authentic, raw, and honest. They reflect the complexity of our world-a world without a GPS to guide us into the future, where answers are often free, but good questions are priceless.
Dilemmas call for introspection, while manifestos call for action.
Manifestos are idealistic, romantic and convenient. Worse, they are often naïve, simplistic, and utopian-dangerously so. They inspire focus and action but frequently lack introspection and justification.
Perhaps I’m getting old, but lately, I see much action taken without much introspection. The kind of action that is ready to use violence to build a new world on the ruins of the current one. Yet, the world is never as simple as manifestos suggest, especially after the revolutionary (i.e., destructive) phase is over, and we must eventually build something.
And so I’ve returned to dilemmas as a better way to face the future. Because the world is transformed by asking questions. And because, as Richard Feynman noticed, it is better to have questions we have no answers for than answers we can’t question.
So, I’m back to Hamlet. Back to doubt, uncertainty, paradox, and the possibility of being wrong.
What about you? Are you up for revolution or introspection? Do you embrace the paradox or prefer clear answers?

    Until humans evolve eating meat may be necessary. Humans who do not yet have control over their life energy, may still need to trap their life energy in the muscles, in the system. It is more a matter of evolution; physical, mental, and spiritual than it is just a matter of ethics. Most humans are not there yet, they are still trapped in materiality in this material age.

    The Catholic Church, the fathers, understood transubstantiation. They knew in a medieval age it was beyond comprehension so they symbolized it in the Mass. We are now moving towards a quantum age but transubstantiation like consciousness is beyond the comprehension of most people, no matter how smart they think they are. ‘ So don’t put down the Catholic Church. Protestantism emphasizes reason. Reason is the feather on top of the volcano, it is useful but in no way is it fundamental. First consciousness, then mind, then reason whose purpose is to negotiate between thought and feeling. Reason is a function, the Western mind has turned it in a Deity, which is problematic, and hopefully won’t turn out to be a total disaster.

    The Catholic Church kept the Dark Occult out of the mainstream before Western humanity reached the Age of Reason after The Dark Age. It never gets credit for it, and it should. It is viewed of being repressive and controlling for no reason. There was a reason; a very good reason. It guided Western humanity safely to The Age of Reason.

    The problem with philosophy today is that it has been reduced to materialism. Darwin being the last great philosopher? The ancient philosophers must be turning in their graves. It is difficult to be a philosopher in an age where consciousness is ‘the hard problem,’ is not understood and life, consciousness, mind began in a muddy pond somewhere. We are in a material age and consequently matter is the limit of what many are capable of comprehending.

    • @SingularityFM
      @SingularityFM 18 днів тому

      I agree with you about embracing change, but for me, that is life, not death. Death, on the other hand, never changes, for only when dead things remain the same, and for as long as there is life, there is change. That is why Alvin Toffler said, “Change is not merely necessary to life - it is life.”

    • @Kenny-tl7ir
      @Kenny-tl7ir 18 днів тому

      @@SingularityFM No, you don’t get it. There is no such thing as life and death. These two polar opposites don’t exist, they are illusions created by the puny human mind. When you say “death never changes”, you mean “change never changes” or to put it in a better form “the only constant is change”. Therefore change yourself to be aligned with the universe. The only death that happens is your Ego, which is the only thing that resists change. Break it.

    Nikola, I didn't know of your flirtation with transhumanism. It sounds like you are coming back to your senses--which is good, since senses are biology, and biology is life. I know you interviewed Dr. Hameroff but I don't know what you've concluded regarding the Penrose-Hameroff quantum theory of consciousness. I'm inclined to believe consciousness transcends the quantifiable, physical realm and therefore the realm of the senses. But I believe the physical realm, senses, and our place in this world interact with the non-physical aspect of our being. I don't know if you have studied proprioception, but I find in my walks, runs, and long-distance bicycling a confirmation of the truth that perception of reality is not dependent upon the brain. The knee reflex test does not involve the brain, only the knee and nerves running to the lower spine. Knowing where the feet and hands are is often not processed through the brain, as proprioception studies have confirmed. In my youth I was prone to sprained ankles. But when I began wearing 8" military boots the problem dissolved to nothing. Somehow, binding the ankle in leather or thick, rigid fabric allows the entire foot and ankle to know where they are in space and relative to the body--and thus no sprains. We're left with the truth that something in or near the body but not the brain is assisting in the process of running or bicycling or walking. I am aware--my body is aware--of where it is, and this awareness is not processed by the brain, but somehow by consciousness itself. Transhumanists surrender all of that and more. They surrender consciousness in favor of immortality. But the thing is, consciousness is life; it follows that to surrender consciousness is to rush headlong into death. Immortality through transhumanism? No. Transhumanism is divorced from reality, divorced from truth, divorced from consciousness, divorced from life. We're not independent of the physical world. We are embedded in it. In fact, we are connected to it in many ways, as proprioception proves, as the doctrine of interbeing (Zen Buddhism) teaches, as just about all monotheistic and polytheistic religions teach. Transhumanism? It is a perversion. It is an abomination. PM 2024

    The transition would need to happen in a post-capitalist society. Otherwise, we will become nothing but capitalist robots. If you look closely, that's what the working human slave already is. It would just be an evolution of that reality into an actual physical body prison. Every thought will have an ad pause you won't be able to skip.

    I had to repost this because edits kept failing. I love the premise, but dilemma vs manifesto or introspection vs revolution might be a false dichotomy. In order for people to choose what's right for themselves, they must have options. If we don't have a manifesto to develop those options, then the dilemma remains something to ponder as everyone meets their death sentence, some having faced lifetimes of torment from what would have been quickly curable diseases. People are stuck. They keep things the way they've always been because they've always been that way, yet the technologies we develop for war are sometimes mysterious wonders that are locked away as we age another 20 years, and used to destroy an enemy who could have been a friend. If we prioritize ending suffering over ending lives, we'd make a better world. And you and I might live to experience it. However, if developing the technology causes suffering, that's the time to pause for introspection. So, I believe we urgently need both at various times in various fields. We urgently need AGI, yet we must stop to evaluate safety when the time is right. How can we engineer containment for something we have no clue how to create? It's definitely time to stop embracing generative technology to the point of burning the planet to force bot responses on people who don't want them. We should stop destroying artists, and stop destroying the desire to become artists. There would be enough time to think if generative AI wasn't a tool of capitalism used to urgently concentrate all ownership in the hands of as few people as possible. Life extension technology requires revolution. Right now! We're all dying. If there's something someone could be doing to stop it, then by dragging their feet they are killing us. They should be slapped in the face, shaken, and yelled at until they wake up and do something. We need to throw money at them and demand results. If politicians and religions stand in the way, undermine them and get rid of them. Thanks for the question. I generally don't favor revolution. I'm averse to loss, prone to nostalgia, and very aware of the unnecessary suffering which can be created by throwing things out and moving too fast. I'm getting older. On the other hand, I'm going to die. Getting older makes the need for change more urgent. I don't want to be erased after suffering a life of misery only to just miss out on thousands of years in paradise. The more brain cells I lose, the less of me there is to experience that paradise if I do make it.

    Great points i think of course it should be up to the individual, albeit a mute point at the moment. As there is very little progress. and in the U.S. lifespans are declining. PE Rowe just wrote and narrated an audiobook. "Human but not Human." its actually an episode in a series , but also a stand alone story. I don't think you have to listen to all 20 some previous episodes to understand some of the dilemma of a human conscious in a machine transported back to earth . to try and stem an impending unregulated AI environment . Her story in the series is of a human conscious uploaded to a computer. Rowe also has about 70 total stories or more on UA-cam.( about 1 per week in the last 18 months.) which are not part of Misfits which is the series this character in '''Human but not Human''' is a part of. He intelligently covers many interesting aspects of AI, Trans humanism, Biological longevity issue among many other topics. Its great listening , and (like you) he deserves more attention. If you could approach him for an interview. many would enjoy it.

    I probably subscribed to your channel for 10+ years. At that time, I wasn't sure if we'll reach AGI in our lifetime, but now it seems like that's much more likely. But the brain uploading and BCI seems to have stalled/slowed. So we might have AGI by the 2040s, but we might not have the technology to transfer to a non-biological substrate or to merge with AI.

    I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it. Transhumanists have been blathering about technology replacing biology for decades, with little or nothing to show for it. If you've followed these subcultures for a long time as I have, you should eventually realize that they have a terrible track record of actually predicting or creating the future (e.g. read any "cyberpunk" era futurism from the 1980s and compare to the present world), and are really more ideologues or cultists with psychological and spiritual problems than sober scientists and technologists.

    Excellent talk, filled with wisdom! I feel like our society has forgotten that we need wisdom, as is shown by how we treat the elderly..... either making them go into care homes or be the puppet president of the united states lol. We have all this talk lately about AI, but little questioning about it's lack of wisdom or ethics. I think maybe there's still hope to bring these back into the culture, but it's going to take a lot of work. I don't know many people who take the time to learn about these things, let alone really live by them. It's also hard to discern because there's so much virtue signaling with little living in a truly virtuous way. We've become more obsessed with our appearance to society than with our own integrity. I really appreciate what you're trying to do here! Cheers!

    Technology feels like a demon not a god. , but as you say technology itself is just a tool and is not the problem. The problem is the system we are working and living in will become obsolete, when AI breaks the money for labor paradigm. Will we be Genocided or Apartieded if we can't compete with Bots ? Make no mistake we cant beat bots much longer in large numbers at much of anything. Or will we find a way to share their outputs. for the benefit of all people.? I too like technology but i like it better when i could still beat it at Chess or know some could win at Go or many could write better or paint.( yes bots are already winning artistic painting competitions). When AI and bots can do the dishes and the taxes, put out the fires ,do brain surgery ,diagnose disease with far more accuracy, drive cars, fly planes, quote legal precedent and logically argue the law. run companies pick stocks, play poker, build homes etc etc etc - probably without limits. What will people do? Will we still be required to ""earn"" our living ? If so what will we continue do in large numbers better than bots?

    • @MattAngiono
      @MattAngiono 23 дні тому

      Many important questions! I too think the real issue is the social structures we've set up and their maximization algorithms that determine everything. We've got entirely the wrong incentives and live in a system that runs contrary to nature. It has little ability to balance runaway trends, or to apply ethics to so many areas where it's needed. Technology is a tool, but it's also important to remember that tools have inherent qualities about them that lead them to certain uses or outcomes. People often say certain tech isn't good or bad, but it's just how you use it, and I believe this is just plain wrong. Certain tech will always lean towards specific uses that can be favorable or not so much. Yet our society just acts like all tech is just neutral and we shocks develop it all regardless. This is so crazy. You can't reverse so much of what's already happening. You can't give the cellphone generation their childhood back. You can't just teach them to suddenly appreciate nature or adventure when they've grown up coddled and "safe" and we're only at the tip of the iceberg with immersive tech. We will just have to see, but in the meantime, all of us who value our humanity should be discussing the ethics around this all.... Cheers

    To enjoy more technology? Eat nice things? Take flights around the world? Buy cheap stuff? Obtain the latest gadgets? Yield more power? Acquire more speed? Oh yes! and much more. We internalize constant innovation, with no questions, like an ever expanding wheel that is turning on it’s own power and purpose. Which then reveals two not-so-nice things. One, about Technology leading civilization and not the other way around anymore. Two, our individual obedience to the tyrannical nature of Technology itself. The ‘technosphere’ we are webbed within, as seductive, as high-resolution, is certainly not free nor about individual freedom. Given that political and social tyranny predates modern Technology by thousands of years, yet I speak of a certain tyranny, that always favors and needs Technology. Which includes this b*s* singularity as well.

And I for myself am not even sure if I should be more afraid of the stupid masses (and what these masses will do in case the system just collapses) - or about the "evil puppet masters" ... the latter will nuke the masses away before these masses destroy civilisazion, I`d guess ...

    Thank you for a thought provoking article. It is hard to imagine the rich not paying soldiers to protect their skins but the message on autonomous weapons is clear. It all comes down to whether the rich and smart enough to realize that sharing the love and distributing weath will be the best strategy to save their bacon.

    I have to point out that no economy based on unpaid labour has survived. Fun fact the word robot comes from a czech word that means forced labour. Think about that for two seconds then replace the word robot with slave.

      "Robot" comes from the Slavic word "rabota" - which simply means "work". Not forced work. Just work.

    Every single commentary I see about this coming shift completely fails to mention the part where Walmart (for example) is sitting there with its doors wide open, fully stocked with goods, completely run by AI and robotics... With not a single customer because nobody has any money. Edit: for clarity the worry seems to be that all the companies will gleefully fire the humans and we will be left with just a small handful of people who control the technology and hoard all the money and power. But WHAT money? Everyone in the story is unemployed, they have zero money coming in. They are not spending anything at Walmart or Home Depot or Taco Bell or pizza hut. They are not going to Disney land, booking cruises, taking vacations, nothing, zero, not one single penny is being spent anywhere. So the folks hoarding all the power and technology... From what? Who are the customers sustaining their trillion dollar businesses? Nobody EVER addresses the plot hole here.

    The Governments will have to inervene through some form of taxation to serve as an allowance for those who are unemployable or just simply print more money and since the productivity will go through the roof this wouldn't be a problem. Could be that governments and corporations will fuse together into some new form of entity where resoursces could be better managed and everyone else will just enjoy life. But designing such a society where the individual will not downgrade and having a smooth transition could be challenging.

      Sorry, but becoming a corporate serf with lots of distractions (social media, video games, porn, etc.) isn't a road to anything good. People require sovereignty, a sense of power, to have a fulfilling life. What you're describing is Nietzsche's "Last Man" existence, or the "mouse utopia" applied to human beings: a degenerate, enslaved vision of life that won't end well. Tech ideologues who think it will (see Harari) are some of the most dangerously deranged and spiritually bankrupt people in the world.

    I see the goal of a post scarcity society, but the path, if done through Capitalism, will undoubtedly be so destructive that the goal will never be reached.

      Yes. But also similar left vs right wing discussions I think are largely staus quo preserving. Instead we should move forward from what we have and I personally think we should aim at new systems of governance first, specifically forms of liquid democracy. I don't see anything changing before we are able to have emergent forums for political deliberations with actual political efficacy/purchase/power that don't necessarily involve who we currently think of as politicians but instead representatives of e.g. grassroot organizations, researchers, your regular Joi and Joe, etc.. This isn't the whole story - far from it - but I need to go to bed so I can get up to work tomorrow! (Oh, which reminds me that I think we could easily do with a 15-20 hour work week (average, to compensate for jobs like delivery, shipping, etc. that can only be done in one sitting, and of course there is much more to this story too; like professions where there are a lack of potential workers)).
